California Health Insurance Quote

When it comes to getting a California health insurance quote it is important to understand the distinction between the different types of health plans that are offered. Health insurance plans are broken down into indemnity or fee-for-service plans and managed care plans. Managed care plans are broken down further into three groups, HMOs, PPOs and POS health insurance plans.

A California health insurance quote should explain all of the kinds of insurance to a potential buyer as well as the fees involved so the individual can make an informed decision. A California health insurance quote from a qualified expert should leave the individual feeling confident that he or she is armed with all of the necessary information. This should help turn the California health insurance quote into the purchase of a health insurance policy, very much like browsing that turns to buying.

An indemnity plan gives an individual plenty of decision making power in regards to what doctor he sees or what hospital he goes to for tests or in case of an emergency. The bill for medical services rendered is then sent to the insurance company and they pay a portion of the bill. The individual must pay a deductible each year (for example $200 or $250) before the insurance company will begin to pay their portion for the medical needs of the individual. In most cases once the insurance begins, the company pays 80 percent while the insured member pays 20 percent.

A California health insurance quote must include a discussion of the three managed care plans offered to its members. HMOs (or health maintenance organization) is the form of managed care that is the most established, having been around for the longest period of time. In this case the HMO offer its insured members a number of different health services and benefits for a decided upon monthly price. There is more than one kind of HMO. A staff or group HMO is one in which physicians directly work for the health network and they see patients at a clinic or a central medical office. In other cases there are HMOs who make contracts with certain physicians or groups of doctors who work out of their own private offices. These types of HMOs are called IPAs (individual practice associations).

Another important aspects of a California health insurance quote is an understanding of what a PPO (or preferred provider organization) is. This form is similar to indemnity health plans. A person belonging to a PPO can see a doctor within the network for a lower price than if you went outside the unit or network. The member will pay a co-payment (which is a set price that you must pay for a medical service, such as ten dollars for a visit to a doctor and/or five dollars for the price of a prescription). It is allowable for the member to go outside of the PPO but he or she will pay a higher deductible as well as higher coinsurance.

A California health insurance quote must also look at the third form of managed care health plans, which are POS plans (point-of-service). The primary care physicians in a point-of-service plan make patient referrals to other health care providers in the network. However if this type of pan there is a degree of flexibility as members can get referrals that go outside of the network but still be covered by the plan. If it is physician that makes the referral outside of the POS then the health insurance plan will pay either all or a great deal of the medical bill. However if an individual goes outside the plan for medical services covered under the plan, then the person in question must pay coinsurance.
